3. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)

Meet the king of the outback: Battery Lithium Iron Phosphate, better known as LiFePO4.

This chemistry is the gold standard for anyone serious about reliable off-grid power. Why? Because it’s ultra-safe, crazy durable, and built to take a beating.

They have phosphate as the cathode and graphite as the anode in them. Resulting in nominal voltage of 3.2 volts, which makes them replace lead acid batteries. They’re thermally stable too. Means they’ll not cook themselves until 518 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC)

This one’s a bit of a hybrid. It uses nickel, manganese, and cobalt as a cathode to create a stable chemistry. Means the high specific energy of nickel is combined with stability of manganese.

As a result, it offers higher size-to-power ratio than LiFePO4. So, it is used in applications where critical performance is needed in tight space. But it has lower voltage & doesn’t last as long, clocking in at 1,000 to 2,000 cycles.

5. Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide (NCA)

If you’re chasing performance over everything else, NCA is your beast.

It’s what Tesla uses to power their vehicles, and it’s designed for high output over longer periods. But they’re also more sensitive and need serious battery management systems to stay safe. Plus, their cobalt and nickel content cause a hike in price.
